Course details and general information

HOW OFTEN DO EVENING CLASSES RUN? . . .

There are three terms per year:
October to December (Autumn)
January to March (Spring)
April to June (Summer)

Please note, term dates above are approximate only. Term dates will be confirmed on our website approx. 10 weeks before the term commences.

HOW LONG DOES EACH COURSE RUN FOR? . . .

All evening classes run for a total of 20 hours of teaching. This is typically taught as one class of 2 hours each week for 10 weeks (or equivalent).

HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE THERE PER CLASS? . . .

We require a minimum of 6 students for the class to run and there is a maximum class size of 15. Places are granted on a first-come, first-served basis.

HOW DO I REGISTER MY INTEREST FOR AN EVENING CLASS PRIOR TO REGISTRATION OPENING? . . .

You can sign up to our mailing list here. You will then receive notification by email each time a new timetable is released. Please add the ULP email address to your safe sender list to avoid the emails going into your junk folder.

WHERE DO EVENING CLASSES TAKE PLACE? . . .

Classes take place on the main UEA campus. You will be informed which room your class will be in when you receive your confirmation email.

WHERE CAN I PARK? . . .

Car parking is available in the main car park and after 6pm costs a flat fee of £1. All car parking information can be found here.

IS THERE A BREAK FOR HALF TERM? . . .

Unless mentioned otherwise, evening classes are taught during half-term.

WILL I BE REQUIRED TO UNDERTAKE ANY ASSESSMENT AS PART OF THE EVENING CLASS? . . .

All ULP evening classes are intended for personal development and pleasure only. There are no formal assessments included in the courses.

WILL I ACHIEVE A QUALIFICATION UPON COMPLETION OF AN EVENING CLASS? . . .

Our evening classes do not offer a formal qualification, however an attendance certificate can be requested upon successful completion of the course (typically 80% attendance is required or, if less, left to the discretion of the tutor). If you would like to explore external language exams, please speak to your tutor so that they may direct you to the appropriate examination board.

DO LANGUAGE EVENING CLASSES COUNT TOWARDS MY TRAINING PATHWAY AS A POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH STUDENT?. . .

Yes. You will need to record the details of your course on the PPD Plan. Further details can be found on this website here.

WILL I BE EXPECTED TO COMPLETE HOMEWORK? . . .

Some tutors may provide simple homework or ask students to revise content between lessons. Although most classes will include some revision of the previous week’s content, regular practice outside of this time will aid your retention and help increase your confidence. Please note that there are no formal assessments included in the evening courses, and that our tutors are very understanding if you are unable to complete a set task.

WILL I HAVE TO BUY A TEXTBOOK? . . .

Your tutor will advise you as to whether you may need to purchase a textbook or if material will be provided via photocopies or worksheets.

WILL I HAVE ACCESS TO THE UEA LIBRARY RESOURCES? . . .

Evening Class Students can use the Library as visitors and can use the building to study and for reference purposes but are unable to borrow items. Visitors are asked to sign in at Library Reception on arrival. Access is between 8.00am-6.00pm daily, including weekends. Outside of those hours access to the Library is via campus card only.

Floor 0 and 1 are collaborative study floors where you can work in groups and talking is permitted. Other floors of the library offer silent study spaces.

Visitor PC logins are available for access to our online resources from 09:00-17:00 Monday to Friday, and 11:00-17:00 Saturday and Sunday. Library catalogue PCs are available on each floor of the Library and you can access our guest search online.

Language levels and how to choose

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH EVENING CLASSES ARE BEING OFFERED EACH TERM? . . .

A schedule listing all languages and Levels offered for study will be made available via the Evening Classes page.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH LEVEL IS RIGHT FOR ME? . . .

You can review all level descriptors here on our website. Click the language you wish to study, and then click the pink links on the right-hand side of the page for info about what is covered at each level.

IS THERE AN ENTRANCE TEST OR AN OPEN EVENING TO HELP ME CHOOSE WHICH EVENING CLASS WOULD BE MOST SUITABLE FOR ME? . . .

There is not an entrance test or open evening prior to registration.

I HAVE REVIEWED THE LEVEL DESCRIPTORS BUT AM STILL UNSURE AS TO WHICH LEVEL I SHOULD REGISTER FOR - WHAT SHOULD I DO? . . .

Contact the ULP team at ulp@uea.ac.uk for assistance. Where possible, they will consult with a tutor and may put you directly in touch them.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I START AN EVENING CLASS WHICH IS NOT SUITED TO MY ABILITY LEVEL? . . .

We are happy for students to swap to a different level, so long as the class which they wish to transfer to is running and has spaces available. Please also refer to the terms and conditions regarding refunds.

REGISTERING for AN EVENING CLASS

HOW DO I REGISTER FOR AN EVENING CLASS? . . .

You can register for an evening class by going to our Evening Classes page or by visiting the UEA Store.

WHEN CAN I REGISTER FOR AN EVENING CLASS? . . .

Registrations for each term will open approximately 10 weeks prior to the start of term. Sign up to our mailing list to receive a notification when the applications are open ahead of each term.

Confirmation of a place

WHEN WILL I RECEIVE CONFIRMATION OF MY PLACE? . . .

Upon booking and paying for your class, you will receive an email to confirm your registration. All further information, such as your tutor's name and classroom location will be emailed to you at least one week in advance of your first class.

Email confirmations will be sent to the email address you used to register on the UEA Store. Please check your junk email folders as UEA emails are sometimes diverted to junk mail by service providers).

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE CLASS I WANT TO ATTEND IS ALREADY FULL?. . .

All of our classes are booked on a first come, first serve basis. In the event of a class being fully booked, please email us at ulp@uea.ac.uk to be added to a waiting list.

ARE EVENING CLASSES EVER CANCELLED? . . .

ULP evening classes are subject to a minimum student uptake and although we make every effort to run all of the classes offered on the schedule, there may be times that we will have to close a class due to low recruitment. Should this happen, you will be contacted via email and offered a refund, deferral or transfer to a different language/level.

Fees and Payment

HOW MUCH DO EVENING CLASSES COST? . . .

All of our evening classes cost £190 for 20 hours of teaching.

ARE THERE DISCOUNTS OR CONCESSIONS AVAILABLE? . . .

As we strive to keep the cost of our classes as low as possible, unfortunately we are unable to offer any discounts or concessions.

HOW DO I PAY FOR MY EVENING CLASS? . . .

In order to book a place onto one of our classes, you must make payment in advance via the UEA Store. All classes are £190.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF MY ULP EVENING CLASS FEES ARE TO BE PAID BY MY EMPLOYER OR UEA SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT? . . .

If an employer external to UEA is paying for your course, please use your confirmation of payment email as proof of payment to claim the cost back from your employer/sponsor.

If your UEA school/department is paying for your course, please contact ulp@uea.ac.uk to process an internal transfer.

Attendance

IS MINIMUM ATTENDANCE REQUIRED? . . .

There is no minimum attendance required, although the flat fee of £190 per course is applicable to all participants (unless, exceptionally if classes are cancelled by the ULP and students are unable to attend the re-scheduled classes). To qualify for an attendance certificate you need to attend 80% of lessons.

DO I NEED TO LET YOU KNOW IF I AM UNABLE TO ATTEND? . . .

It is not a requirement to let us know if you are unable to attend a class, but if you wish to do so, please email ulp@uea.ac.uk.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR AN ATTENDANCE CERTIFICATE FOR MY EVENING CLASS? . . .

You can request an attendance certificate upon successful completion of the course (typically 80% attendance) by emailing ulp@uea.ac.uk

HOW WILL I BE ABLE TO CATCH UP WITH MISSED WORK IF I AM UNABLE TO ATTEND CLASS? . . .

Please request course materials for missed classes by contacting your tutor directly via email. They will also be able to answer any questions you might have.

Cancellations/Withdrawals/Refunds

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I WISH TO CANCEL OR WITHDRAW FROM MY CLASS? . . .

All withdrawals must be submitted in writing by the course participant to the ULP team by email to ulp@uea.ac.uk.

LANGUAGES AT UEA

ARE THERE ANY OTHER OPPORTUNITIES TO STUDY LANGUAGES AT UEA? . . .

Yes – in addition to the BA (Hons) Modern Language we offer the BA (Hons) Modern Languages - with a foundation year (which enables you to study two-degree languages), and degrees in Translation, Media and Modern Language(s) and in Translation and Interpreting.
